Job Duties


Are you looking for an opportunity to implement processes and procedures to keep the state of Virginia safe? We are searching for individuals driven by safety to support state traffic operations.



The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking an individual to serve as a lead worker on crews performing duties associated with district operations (such as field reviews, installation and Maintenance of pavement markings and messages) on primary, secondary, and interstate routes. You will review requests and field conditions; gather data and prepare drawings or sketches; and determine tools, materials, and equipment needed. Positions will schedule assignments received from supervisor, identify proper procedures and work assignment; review work to ensure activities are performed correctly and provide input to supervisor regarding employee performance. Perform manual labor, equipment operation and preventative maintenance on equipment; document/report on daily crew activities, accomplishments, time and materials usage; and review and approve documentation associated with work activities. May provide technical advice to contractors.

Minimum Qualifications


• Experience coordinating and scheduling daily work, personnel and equipment, as well providing on-site direction and technical guidance.
• Experience with traffic control device installation, investigations and data collection pertaining to sign installation, pavement markings and messages.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Safety shoes required,
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT Medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to customers.
• Experience applying federal, state and VDOT regulations and standards regarding traffic control devices, work zone traffic control standards and techniques, and safety regulations.
• Experience using and maintaining various types of equipment.
• Experience Reading, interpreting highway plans, sketches and technical documents.


Additional Considerations


• Progressive experience that reflects an increase in accountability and responsibility.
• Experience in pavement marking installation and messaging.
• Valid CDL, VDOT Flagger Certification, First Aid/CPR Certification and Basic Work Zone Traffic Control Training preferred
