Richmond District, South Hill Residency is seeking a highly skilled individual with strong highway maintenance experience and leadership skills to become a frontline supervisor for their Specialty Crew. As a Sign Supervisor you will plan, schedule, supervise and perform new sign installation, repair or replacement of damaged signs, and removal of signs from roadways. You will receive and respond to work orders; and maintain sign inventory and records. The position will assist in the preparation of budget reports, data and records; assist in forecasting additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; and monitor expenditures and recommend adjustments as needed. You will assign daily work and monitor work performed; provide onsite direction and guidance; and complete daily work reports including time, equipment and materials. This position will oversee and perform a variety of roadway maintenance and emergency operations activities; and provide technical guidance to crew members performing maintenance activities and equipment operation. Position will also be responsible for maintaining and supervising the brine production for the 5500-gallon brine system for the residency; and on a routine basis serve as liaison between South Hill Residency Office and the Department of Corrections in regard to the inmate program for the residency.
This position is designated as essential during emergency situations, which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
• Experience in sign installation, maintenance and repair.
• Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy-duty equipment used in routine and emergency maintenance operations.
• Ability to supervise the work of others to include performance management.
• Ability to compile data, prepare reports and maintain records.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Valid driver's license.

Special Instructions
If selected as a finalist, you will undergo reference checks and verification of work history, DMV Records Check, Pre-employment physical and drug screen, and Fingerprint-based criminal history record check. All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
