We are seeking an experienced individual interested in joining our team who is able to supervise and coordinate the transport of equipment and supplies using tractor trailer and accessories. You will operate the full scope of roadway maintenance equipment and perform preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks during routine and emergency response operations. You will load and unload trucks; complete and maintain all required documentation; schedule and make deliveries of fuel, equipment and supplies to field locations and equipment shops; schedule and prioritize equipment moves daily to meet customer demands and business needs; and perform preventative maintenance and repairs in a timely and efficient manner.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures. Ability to work independently and in a team environment; to gather data and prepare reports; to perform heavy manual labor; to read and follow oral and written instructions to include technical equipment manuals and provide related instruction to staff. Ability to complete forms and documents; to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to supervise, lead and train others. Ability to obtain valid CDL, DOT medical card, hazmat and tanker endorsement within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. Skill in the use of hand and power tools and in the operation of a wide variety automotive vehicles, trucks, wreckers and other equipment used in highway maintenance and repair. Advanced skill in the operation of multiple axle truck and trailer combinations. Safety shoes required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of training, experience or education in Heavy Equipment Repair or related field desired. Knowledge and experience in equipment shop operations. Experience operating tractor trailers for fuel deliveries or low-boy for moving equipment and supplies. Valid Class A CDL with hazmat or tanker endorsements. Skill in operating heavy equipment and performing mechanical repairs of equipment.

NOTE: Employees hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
