- Utilize your sound knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, and standards to design plans for traffic control devices;
- Incorporate traffic engineering requirements into roadway plans; and
- Make recommendations for plan changes.
In addition to applying your knowledge of VDOT, state, and federal policies and procedures as they relate to transportation engineering, the core responsibilities of the position include:
- Conducting traffic engineering studies related to signs, pavement markings, guardrails, rumble strips, and traffic signals.
- Conducting and analyzing data and compiling reports for study findings and recommendations.
- Preparing designs and sketches for work zones, signage, pavement markings, guardrails, rumble strips, traffic control, detours, and other improvements.
- Reviewing site plans and traffic impact analyses.
- Conducting speed studies, roadway and pedestrian safety or capacity analyses, and special studies.
- Providing technical assistance to VDOT staff and outside consultants in assigned areas of traffic design.
- Preparing and delivering presentations to public, private, and local entitles.

Minimum Qualifications
* Skill in collecting and analyzing traffic data and recommendations.
* Ability to develop solutions to traffic issues in assigned areas.
* Working knowledge of standard office and traffic engineering software platforms.
* Ability to read and interpret roadway construction and maintenance plans.
* Experience in developing reports and presenting solutions to stakeholders.
* Familiarity with or experience conducting traffic engineering studies involving traffic operations, traffic control devices, and roadway and pedestrian safety and capacity issues.
* Familiarization with federal rules and regulations, including MUTCD, AASHTO, and ITE practices.
* Valid driver's license required.
Additional Considerations
* Versatility to work under minimal supervision or direction on multiple projects, with varying delivery dates, and for multiple stakeholders.
* Experience working in a traffic engineering environment.
* A combination of training, experience, or education in civil engineering or traffic engineering or related field desired.
